Almost every indoor play centre in the country is organised around one object. It goes by different names on the website, but structurally it is the same thing: a multi level steel frame, bolted together, clad in padding and netting, with slides, tunnels and obstacles threaded through it. Parents call it the big frame. The trade calls it a soft contained play structure.
It helps to know how it is built, because once you understand the construction you stop looking at the colours and start looking at the joints. That shift is most of what this guide is trying to teach.
What is actually holding it up
Under the padding is a grid of steel uprights, usually round hollow section, set into a base plate that is fixed to the floor. Horizontal beams run between the uprights at each level. Between the beams sit platform decks, typically plywood or steel mesh, covered in a soft mat and then a vinyl skin.
The uprights are wrapped in foam sleeves, then covered in vinyl and either stitched, zipped or taped closed. Netting is threaded through eyelets or clamped in channels along the beams, and it is the netting rather than the padding that stops a child leaving the structure sideways.
This tells you where the failure modes are. Padding compresses and tears. Vinyl splits at the seam because the seam is where the material is thinnest and the wear is highest. Netting slackens where it is grabbed, which is at handhold height. Bolts loosen where the structure gets shaken, which is at the bottom of slides and at the top of climbing walls. None of that is a scandal. It is what a heavily used structure does. What matters is whether anybody is looking.
The standard that sits behind it
The playground equipment family of standards is published as BS EN 1176. The part that deals with fully enclosed play equipment, which is what a soft play frame is, is BS EN 1176-10. There is a separate part, BS EN 1176-11, covering spatial networks, the three dimensional rope structures you sometimes see in larger centres. Impact attenuating surfacing has its own standard, BS EN 1177.
Two things follow from that, and both are useful. First, a frame built to the enclosed equipment standard is meant to be a closed volume. If a child can get out of it at height in a way that is not a designed exit, something has gone wrong. Second, the standards are about the equipment, not about the operation. A perfectly compliant frame in a badly run building is still a badly run building. We come back to this point in what the standards actually cover.
Standards are published documents you can buy from the British Standards Institution. They are not free, which is a genuine barrier, but the scope statements are public and worth reading before you form a view about what a venue has or has not signed up to.
Levels, and why the top one is different
Most frames have three levels. The ground level is where the toddlers get in. The middle level is the busy one, full of obstacles, and it is where the traffic jams happen. The top level carries the drop slides, the rope bridges and whatever the venue put in as the headline feature.
The top level is different in kind rather than degree. The consequences of a fall are larger, the supervision is worse because nobody on the floor can see up there, and the children who make it up are usually the oldest and quickest. A frame that is well run has an age or height rule for the top level and enforces it in the doorway, not by shouting at the structure.
If you want a single question to ask at the counter, ask what the height rule is for the highest slide and how it is checked. The answer tells you a great deal about the venue's attitude in about eight seconds.
Where the wear shows first
Frames age in a predictable order, and you can learn to read that order.
- Slide exits. The mat at the bottom of a slide takes every landing, all day. It compresses, it slides out of position, and the vinyl splits along the fold. This is the single highest value thing to look at.
- Handhold height on netting. Netting slackens where it is pulled. Slack netting means a wider gap, and a wider gap on the outside face of a frame is a real problem.
- Padding on corners. Corners get hit. Foam compresses permanently and stops doing its job long before the vinyl looks bad, so squeeze rather than look.
- Ball pit walls. The join between the ball pit lining and the frame is a classic pinch point, discussed further in the piece on ball pits.
- Tunnel entries. Where a tunnel meets a deck, the edge takes shins all day and the covering wears through.

Who a frame actually suits
A frame is a good format for a child who can climb independently, absorb a bump without it ending the trip, and take a turn. It is a poor format for a child who cannot yet do those things, which is why good centres separate the toddler area properly rather than putting a low rope across a corner.
It is also, quietly, a poor format for some older children. A confident nine year old in a frame designed for sixes is bored within twenty minutes and starts inventing ways to make it interesting, which is where the collisions come from. Venues that run a defined older session, or that have a second structure with more resistance in it, are solving a real problem rather than adding a feature.
What supervision means inside an enclosed box
Here is the uncomfortable part. The whole design principle of an enclosed frame is that a child inside it is contained. That is a safety feature and it is also a visibility problem: once your child is two levels up and inside a tunnel, you cannot see them and neither can staff.
Well run venues respond to this in three ways. They keep the sightlines through the structure as open as the design allows. They put a member of staff on the floor whose actual job is the frame, not the till. And they have a clear rule about who is responsible, which in almost every centre in the country is you.
That last point catches people out and it is worth being blunt about it. Buying a ticket does not transfer supervision of your child to the venue. The short version is that a play centre is not registered childcare unless it explicitly says it is, and the adult responsible for a child in a soft play frame is almost always the adult who brought them.
- What is the height or age rule for the highest slide, and how do you check it at the door?
- Who has responsibility for supervising children inside the frame during a general session?
- When was the structure last inspected by someone from outside the business, and what did they look at?
- Is there a daily visual check of the frame before opening, and is it written down?
- Which member of staff is on the floor for the frame rather than the counter during peak times?
How to think about the format
A soft play frame is a very good answer to a specific problem: how to let a child under about eight expend a great deal of energy indoors, in winter, without an unprotected fall. It is not a general purpose answer. It does not stretch older children, it is hard to supervise, and its condition degrades in ways that are invisible unless you know where to look.
Judge one on its joints, its slide exits and its floor staff, and you will be judging the things that actually matter. Judge it on how many colours it has and you will be judging the thing the venue spent its marketing budget on.
