There is a strand of thinking in play provision, well established in the United Kingdom and reflected in guidance from bodies including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, that says the goal is not to remove risk from play. It is to manage it in a way that keeps the benefit.
That sounds like a slogan. It has a practical meaning, and if you understand it you will read some venues very differently.
The idea, stated properly
A child who has never encountered a difficult climb has no way of learning what a difficult climb feels like, and no basis on which to judge one. If every surface is padded, every gap is closed and every route is easy, the environment teaches nothing about judgement. It also, in practice, gets boring around the age of seven, which is when children start manufacturing their own risk in ways nobody has assessed.
Risk benefit assessment, as opposed to pure risk assessment, is the formalisation of that. Instead of asking only what could go wrong, it asks what the feature is for, what a child gains from it, what could go wrong, and whether the benefit justifies retaining a controlled level of difficulty. It is an established approach in play provision and it is why a good adventure playground looks, to an unaccustomed eye, slightly alarming.
The critical qualifier is controlled. A wobbly rope bridge over deep impact absorbing surfacing, with defined access, is retained risk. A wobbly rope bridge because the fixings have loosened and nobody has looked is a hazard. They can appear identical from twenty feet away, which is exactly why the questions in this piece matter.
What adventure play looks like indoors
The outdoor tradition is timber, rope, height and mud. Indoors, the vocabulary changes but the intent survives. You tend to see some combination of:
- Rope structures and spatial networks. Three dimensional net climbs where the route is not obvious and the child has to plan it. There is a dedicated part of the playground equipment standard for this, BS EN 1176-11 on spatial networks.
- Timber elements. Beams, platforms and bridges built in wood rather than clad steel, which give feedback under the foot that padded surfaces do not.
- Height with real surfacing. Greater fall heights than a soft play frame, over surfacing designed and tested for the drop, which is what BS EN 1177 covers.
- Loose parts. Materials a child can move, stack and build with. The least photogenic feature in any building and often the most valuable.
- Slides and drops with a technique requirement. Not simply fast, but requiring a decision about how to enter.
What a child actually gets
The claim made for adventure play is that it develops physical judgement, resilience and problem solving in a way that fully designed out environments do not. It is a reasonable claim and it is also not something this publication can measure, so let us be careful about how it is put.
What is observable, and what most parents notice within one visit, is engagement. Children who have exhausted a soft play frame in twenty minutes will stay on a rope structure for an hour, because the structure keeps posing new problems. The route matters. Where to put a foot matters. Whether to commit to the next hold matters.
That sustained attention is the format's real product. Whether it produces a measurably more capable child is a question for researchers with a control group, and you should be sceptical of any venue that claims to know the answer.

Telling retained risk from neglect
This is the part that matters, and it is genuinely learnable.
Retained risk is legible. It is obvious what the challenge is, obvious where the edge is, and obvious what happens if you fall. The surfacing beneath it is generous and appropriate to the height. Access is controlled so that a child who cannot manage the feature cannot casually wander onto it. Staff can explain why the feature is like that.
Neglect is illegible. The hazard is not the challenge, it is something incidental: a loose fixing, a frayed rope, a splintered edge, a gap that has opened up. Nobody designed it, nobody can explain it, and it is not doing anything for the child.
The single best test is to ask a member of staff about the most difficult looking feature in the room. In a well run adventure setting you will get an answer about what age it is for, what it is meant to develop and how access is controlled. In a poorly run one you will get a shrug.
Supervision is different here
In a soft play frame, the supervision problem is that you cannot see your child. In an adventure setting, you usually can, and the problem becomes what to do about it.
The instinct is to talk them through it: put your foot there, hold that, no, the other one. There is a reasonable argument, well established among play practitioners, that this actively removes the benefit, because the child is then executing your judgement rather than developing their own.
The middle position most parents land on is to stay close, stay quiet, and intervene when the child asks or when the situation is genuinely beyond them. That is harder than it sounds and it is the actual skill the format asks of the adult.
- How do you decide which features are for which age, and how is that controlled at the entrance?
- What depth and type of surfacing is under the highest feature?
- Do you use a risk benefit approach, and who writes it?
- How often are ropes and timber elements inspected, and by whom?
- What is the staffing on the structure during a busy session?
Who it suits
Adventure play indoors is a strong format for roughly six to twelve, which is precisely the age band that soft play stops serving. It works for a cautious child, who can pick their own level, and for a bold one, who finally meets something that pushes back.
It is a weak format for under fives in the main structure, not because they cannot climb but because the whole design assumes a user who can assess their own limits, and that assessment develops later than the climbing does. Good venues separate the two, which is the theme of the piece on frames and of the piece on zone control.
How to think about the format
If your child is past soft play and not yet interested in a climbing wall, this is very often the right answer. Choose one where the challenge is deliberate, the surfacing is serious, the access is controlled and the staff can explain the thinking. Those four things together are what separates the format from a shabby building with ropes in it.
