Play frames are built to last many years and they are used harder than almost any other piece of equipment a child will meet. They do not usually fail suddenly. They decline, and the decline is visible if you know which four things to look at.
Two kinds of ageing
Separate these and everything gets clearer.
Cosmetic ageing is faded colour, scuffed vinyl, worn carpet, mismatched replacement panels, and the general look of a room that has been used by half a million children. It tells you the venue has been open a long time. It tells you nothing about safety.
Structural ageing is the degradation of the components that are actually doing the work: the foam, the netting, the seams and the fixings. It is much less visible, and it is what matters.
The frustrating consequence is that a shabby looking venue may be structurally sound and a freshly repainted one may not be. Parents routinely judge on the first and worry about the wrong places, and venue marketing is built around exactly that instinct.
Foam is the first thing to go
Foam padding does one job: it absorbs the energy of a child hitting a steel upright. It does that job by compressing and then recovering.
After enough impacts, foam stops recovering. The cells collapse permanently, and the material becomes progressively less able to absorb anything. This happens gradually, it happens fastest at the points that are hit most, and, critically, it is invisible from the outside, because the vinyl skin over it looks exactly the same.
The test is to squeeze. Press your thumb firmly into the padding on an upright, at about the height a running child's shoulder would meet it, and let go. It should push back and return to shape promptly. If it stays dented, or if you can feel the steel behind it under moderate pressure, that padding has stopped working.
Do this at two or three points and compare. A corner near the slide exit against a quiet upright at the back gives you an immediate read on how the venue is managing wear.
Netting slackens where it is grabbed
Netting is the containment system on the outside face of a frame. It is what stops a child leaving the structure sideways at height.
Net slackens under repeated loading, and it slackens most at the height children grab it, which is roughly chest height for the age using that level. Slack netting means a larger mesh aperture, and a larger aperture on an outside face at height is a real problem rather than a cosmetic one.
Check by pushing. Taut netting resists and returns. Netting that bags outward under moderate hand pressure has stretched. Look also at how it is fixed: continuous anchoring into a channel or through eyelets along its whole length is the design, and any section held on with cable ties, rope or tape is a repair rather than a fixing.

Seams and what comes out of them
Vinyl covers split at seams, because that is where the material is under most stress. A split seam matters for three reasons, in ascending order.
It exposes foam, which children pick at and remove, so the split gets larger and the padding gets thinner. It creates an edge that can catch skin. And it eventually exposes whatever is under the foam, which is steel.
A small split that has been repaired promptly, with a patch or a re stitch, is normal maintenance in a busy venue. A split that has been left long enough for the foam to be visibly excavated is a maintenance backlog. Exposed steel at a height a child can reach is the point at which the answer is to leave and say why on the way out.
Movement is the one that ends the visit
The last check is the most important and it takes three seconds.
Put a hand on a vertical member of the frame and push, firmly, the way a child running into it would. A sound structure is rigid. There should be no perceptible movement at the base and no knocking or clicking from a joint.
If a frame moves, rocks or knocks at a joint, that is not wear. It is a loose fixing on a structure that children climb inside. It should be reported to a manager immediately and it should be closed until checked, and if the venue's response is anything other than treating it seriously, leave.
This is the one item in this entire site that is unambiguous. Everything else involves judgement. A frame that moves does not.

Who is meant to be checking
The established pattern in play equipment inspection, reflected in guidance from bodies including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, is three tiers: a routine visual check carried out frequently by the operator, a more detailed operational inspection at longer intervals, and an annual main inspection carried out by a competent person independent of day to day operation.
Indoor commercial play equipment is generally handled on the same logic. What that means for you is that a venue should be able to answer three questions: is the frame looked at daily, is there a more detailed periodic check, and when did somebody from outside the business last inspect it. A venue that can answer all three quickly is a venue with a system. A venue that has to go and ask, and comes back with an answer, is fine. A venue that cannot produce an answer at all has told you what you needed to know.
Keeping it in proportion
Most frames in most venues are fine. The four checks above take about ninety seconds and will almost always come back clear, and the point of doing them is not to find fault but to build the habit, so that on the one occasion something is wrong, you notice it rather than walking past.
It is also worth remembering what a frame is for. A child who spends two hours climbing, crawling and falling over in a padded environment is doing something genuinely good for them. The checks exist so that you can relax afterwards, not so that you spend the visit inspecting.
